Helpful Hints for appetizers

Planning for a cocktail party is fun if you have prepared ahead of time.  Knowing how many appetizers to prepare can be confusing.  Here are some simple guidelines to follow.

Double check your beverages the day before the party.  You don’t want to be running out for supplies while your guests are at your home.

How many Hor d’ ouerves do I prepare?

Pre-dinner   …..3-5 per person

Short Cocktail party   …..4-6 per hour per person

Only Hors d’ ouerves   …..8-12 per person

For 10-20 people prepare about 6 different hos d’ ouevres

For over 20 people prepare about 8 different hors d’ ouevres

TIPS:

Decorate the plate before plating the food by using leaves, flowers or herbs as “beds” or for presentation.

Use a linen napkin, not a doilie as paper absorbs juices and looks tacky

Bigger is not better! Dainty is good! One bite is easier to eat.

Use recipes that will not drip! A wonderful juicy hor d’ ouevre stain is not a welcome sight for your guest.

Serve hor d’ ouevres that do not need a plate…try holding a beverage while juggling a plate and then trying to eat.

Most important tip:  Prepare before hand. Freeze or be able to prepare days before so there is plenty of time to enjoy your party!
